How to Measure For a Bra That Actually Fits

It is estimated that around 80% of women are wearing the incorrect bra size. What?! That's some big numbers! According to the NY Times, 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong bra.  Not only does this make it difficult to feel comfortable in the right size, but it can actually have a negative impact on one's health. So how on earth do you know what the right size is? Stay tuned because we are going to help you know how to measure for one that actually fits.  What is the best way to locate a bra that fits correctly?

Step 1: Start With the Standard Bra To Find Your Band Size

When trying to find the right size, start with a standard bra. Don’t use a pushup, or any other form of a “fancy bra” when gauging a starting point size. One of the most straightforward approaches is to use one that you already have. Even if stick-on bras don't fit the same way as other models, they can’t serve as a good basis for comparison. In order to find the right fit, select a bra that is comfortable and does not pinch or gap. The straps should be flush against your back. Once you find the one that feels the most comfortable around your skin, pay attention to the number in front of the cup size. (Example 32, 34, 36…)

Measure Your Cup Size

Once you have used a standard bra to find out what fits best around your body, the next step is to find out your cup size. To measure your cup size, simply take a measuring tape, measure around the fullest part of your bust, and round to the nearest number. Make sure the measuring tape is right in the middle of your chest, closest to the nipple area. Subtract your band size from your bust measurement to find your cup size. For example, if your bust measures 37 inches, and your band size is 34, the difference will be 3. On the chart below, you'll see a 3 is equal to a C cup, meaning your bra size is 34C.

silicone nipple covers are a great solution for breastfeeding mothers who struggle with leakage. They are reusable, durable, comfortable, leak-proof, easy to use, and discreet.

Once you figure out the correct band and cup size, there are a few other things to check for. Take these things into consideration.

  • One way to ensure your bra size is correct is to fasten the bra on the loosest hook. If it is still comfortable, it means that the band size is suitable. Additionally, the cups should fit smoothly without any bulging or gaping. When you move around, the bra should remain in place and not ride up.
  • Is it too relaxed? Ask yourself if your bra feels too loose, so you have the support that you need.
  • Is it comfortable? If you are feeling any uncomfortable sensations such as pinching, restriction, or other discomforts, it is likely that your bra size is not accurate.
  • What does it look like under garments? One last step in selecting the ideal bra is evaluating how it appears beneath clothing. Clothes should be flush with your body with no visible marks or bunching.
  • It’s so important to make sure that a bra is the right size and shape just for you. A well-fitting bra can have a profound impact on comfort and appearance, while the wrong fit can be uncomfortable and cause damage to the shape of the breasts over time.  Don't be in the 80 percent that's wearing the incorrect bra. Now let's find the right size and change these numbers!
